How Do I Know If My Key Fob Is Bad? 7 Signs and Quick Tests

Signs your key fob is going bad
- Range keeps shrinking. You have to walk closer and closer before the doors unlock. A weak battery is the usual cause, but if range stays short after a new battery, the transmitter or antenna may be failing.
- It works only sometimes. Presses get through one day and not the next. See why keyless entry only works sometimes for the common causes.
- One button is dead. Lock works but unlock or trunk does not. That points to a worn button contact on the circuit board, not the battery.
- A “key not detected” message. Push-button cars show a warning on the dash when they cannot read the smart key.
- The car will not start. On cars with a transponder chip, a damaged chip can stop the engine from starting even though the buttons still lock and unlock.
- Visible damage. A cracked case, loose battery contacts, or corrosion after the fob got wet. See key fob got wet: what to do.
- The fob light no longer flashes. Many fobs have a small LED that blinks when you press a button. No blink with a new battery is a bad sign.
Quick tests before you replace it
- Fit a new battery. Check the type printed on the old one (often CR2032 or CR1632, see what battery a key fob takes) and make sure it sits the right way up.
- Try the spare key. If the spare works normally, the problem is in the first fob. If both fail, the issue is more likely the car.
- Check the car battery. A weak 12-volt car battery can make every fob seem dead.
- Hold the fob against the start button. On many push-button cars this lets the car read the key even when the fob battery is weak. Our guide to starting a push-button car with a dead key fob has the steps.
If the fob stopped working right after you changed the battery, read key fob not working after a battery change before you buy anything.
Can a bad key fob be repaired?
Sometimes. A broken case can be replaced with a new shell, and some button problems can be fixed by a repair shop. If the circuit board or chip is damaged, replacing the fob is usually simpler. A replacement fob has to match your car and be programmed to it.
How to find the right replacement
Match the FCC ID and part number printed on the back or inside of your current fob, and the number of buttons. You can look up your key by VIN or by FCC ID, or browse all car keys and remotes. Most replacement fobs need to be programmed to the car, and keys with a blade need to be cut, usually by a locksmith or dealer.
How long should a key fob last?
The battery usually needs replacing every few years, and the fob itself often lasts much longer if it stays dry and intact. See how long key fobs last for details.
