Key Not Detected: What It Means and How to Start Your Car

What “key not detected” means
A smart key constantly exchanges a low-power radio signal with antennas inside the car. When the car can’t hear that signal, it shows “Key not detected”, “No key detected” or a key symbol with a warning, and it won’t start. It is almost always a signal problem, not an engine problem.
How to start your car when the key is not detected
- Hold the fob against the start button and press the button with the fob. On many vehicles, including many Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and Kia models, this lets the car read the key even with a weak battery.
- Use the backup slot or pocket. Some vehicles have a key slot or a spot in the console or cup holder for this situation. Your owner’s manual shows the exact location.
- Use the emergency key hidden inside most smart keys to open the driver’s door if the doors won’t unlock.
Can I still drive if it says key not detected?
If the warning appears while the engine is already running, most vehicles keep running and will warn you not to switch off. Once you turn the engine off, you may not be able to restart without the key being detected, so fix the cause as soon as you can.
Common causes and fixes
- Weak key battery: the most common cause. Replace the coin cell; see our battery replacement guide.
- Interference: phones, other smart keys, chargers and some electronics near the key can block the signal. Move the key away from them and try again.
- Key position: keys left in a metal case, a bag in the trunk, or far from the cabin antennas may not be detected.
- Weak car battery: low voltage can stop the car’s receiver from working properly.
- Failing or unprogrammed key: if a spare key works and this one doesn’t, the key itself is the problem.
When you need a new smart key
If the key still isn’t detected with a fresh battery, but your spare works, replace the faulty key. Match the FCC ID and part number on your current key, or use the VIN lookup, then browse replacement smart keys. Smart keys usually need a locksmith’s programming tool, typically $50–$100. Real-world examples
- In September 2024, KOLD News 13’s Fact Finders reported that there was still no federal rule requiring keyless-ignition cars to shut themselves off automatically. Congress had ordered one in the 2021 infrastructure law, and it was about two years overdue. Toyota, GM, Ford and others have added auto shut-off on their own, but the timing varies by model. The station told drivers to look up whether their own vehicle has the feature. - In February 2023, Nissan recalled at least 712,458 Rogue and Rogue Sport vehicles (2014–2020 Rogue, 2017–2022 Rogue Sport) that have folding “jackknife” keys. The key could fold while in the ignition, and a driver who bumped it could accidentally turn the engine off while driving.
