Key Fob Not Working After a Battery Change? What to Check Before Reprogramming

By Daniel Shnader · Last updated: October 28, 2026

Short answer Most key fobs keep their programming when you change the battery, so a fob that stops working afterwards usually has a wrong or badly seated battery, dirty contacts or a damaged case, not lost programming. Work through the checks below before you pay for reprogramming.

Do you need to reprogram a key fob after changing the battery?

In most cases, no. The pairing between the fob and your car is stored in the fob’s memory and in the vehicle, not in the battery. Replacing the battery should not erase it. Some vehicles and some older fobs do ask for a short resync step, and the owner’s manual for your car will say if yours does.

Checks to run first

  1. Battery type. Match the number printed on the old battery exactly. A similar-looking coin cell can be a different thickness or voltage. See what kind of battery a key fob takes.
  2. Direction. The positive side usually faces up. Look at how the old battery sat before you removed it.
  3. Fresh battery. A new battery that sat in a drawer for years can be weak. Test with another one.
  4. Contacts. Wipe the metal contacts gently with a dry cotton swab. Oil from your fingers on the battery surface can also cause poor contact, so handle it by the edges.
  5. Case and buttons. Make sure the two halves are clipped closed evenly and the button pad has not shifted. A slightly open case can leave the battery loose.
  6. Range and location. Stand next to the car for the test. Try the physical key or the emergency slot to confirm the car itself responds.

Remote start or push-to-start not responding

Some vehicles will not accept a fob again until it is detected near the start button or a specific resync is done, for example holding the fob against the start button. Look in the owner’s manual under key fob or remote battery replacement. Our guide on starting a push-button car with a dead fob covers that situation, and resetting your keyless entry system covers resets.

When the fob itself is the problem

If the battery is correct and fresh and the fob still does nothing, the fob may be damaged. Water, drops and worn button pads are common reasons. Read key fob got wet: what to do and our list of 7 fixes to try before you replace a key fob.

If you do need a replacement, match the FCC ID on the old fob (see FCC ID vs part number) or look up your vehicle with the VIN lookup. A new fob will need to be programmed, but a fob that only needed a fresh battery should not.
