How to Find a Lost Key Fob (and What to Do If You Can’t)

By Daniel Shnader · Last updated: October 28, 2026

Short answer Retrace your steps and use the car’s lock and panic buttons if you have a spare or a phone app, then check pockets, bags, and between seats. If the fob is gone for good, get a replacement programmed and ask the shop to remove the lost fob from the car so it can no longer be used.

Ways to look for a lost key fob

  1. Retrace your steps. Start with where you last used it, then pockets, bags, jackets and the car’s door pockets and seat gaps.
  2. Use sound. If you have a spare fob, press its panic button or lock button near where you think the lost one is. Some fobs or key cases beep when the car is locked, but this varies by vehicle.
  3. Check the car. Look under seats and in the cup holders and console. Smart keys can sit unnoticed inside the vehicle.
  4. Check your phone apps. Some vehicle apps show the car’s location and let you lock or unlock, but they do not locate the fob itself on most cars.
  5. Check places you shared with others. Valet stands, gyms and shops often hold lost keys.

Is there a way to track a key fob?

Most key fobs do not have built-in tracking. If you want to avoid this in the future, you can attach a Bluetooth tracker to your key ring, as long as it does not interfere with the fob. Keep the fob case dry and intact too: see key fob got wet.

If you cannot find it

  1. Check whether anything else is at risk. If it may have been stolen along with your address or garage opener, take extra care. See how to prevent car theft with a key fob.
  2. Use your spare key if you have one, then order a replacement before the spare is lost too.
  3. Get a replacement fob. Look it up by VIN or by FCC ID if you know it. Our guide to getting a duplicate key fob for less covers the options.
  4. Ask for the lost fob to be removed. When a locksmith or dealer programs the new fob, ask whether they can delete the lost one from the car’s memory so it will not start or unlock the vehicle.
